Cheapest Car Insurance by State (November 2026): The Company That Wins Yours

Thumbnail for the video on the cheapest car insurance company in every state, headline about saving $178 a month

Car insurance prices vary so much by state that the cheapest company in the country might not be the cheapest company where you live. Below is the winner in every state from ValuePenguin's latest study, what switching is worth in dollars, and a simple three-quote method for getting a comparable price.

All prices are averages for ValuePenguin's sample driver: a 30-year-old man with good credit and a clean record driving a 2018 Honda Civic EX, with 50/100/50 liability, matching uninsured-motorist limits, minimum PIP where required, and $500 comprehensive and collision deductibles. Your own quote will be different.

The scoreboard

Nationally, American Family is the cheapest major company for this driver at $159 a month for full coverage, followed by Auto-Owners ($171), Travelers ($173), Geico ($187), State Farm ($192) and Progressive ($207). Nationwide ($265), Allstate ($282) and Farmers ($293) are the most expensive large companies in the study. USAA, available only to military members, veterans and some family members, averages $125.

States won: Travelers 12, Geico 12, Progressive 6, State Farm 6, Erie 2, Farm Bureau 2, Farmers Mutual of Nebraska 2, and one each for Shelter, Farmers, Allstate, Safety, Auto-Owners, Co-Op, Mutual of Enumclaw, American Family and American National.

What switching is worth

ValuePenguin publishes the cheapest rate and the saving against the state average, so the state average is the two added together. In Texas, the average is about $247 a month and State Farm averages $140, a saving of $107 a month or $1,284 a year. In Connecticut, the average is about $305 and Travelers averages $127, a saving of $178 a month or $2,136 a year. In 35 states plus D.C., the cheapest company saves this sample driver at least $50 a month.

The credit-score shock

For a sample driver with poor credit, ValuePenguin found American Family at $263 a month and State Farm at $801, a gap of $538 a month for the same driver and car. A few states, including California, Hawaii and Massachusetts, do not allow insurers to price on credit. Elsewhere, if your credit has changed, the company that was cheapest for you a few years ago may no longer be.

The three-quote method

  • Put identical coverage on every quote: the same liability limits and the same deductibles.
  • Get three quotes: your state's winner above, one national low-cost company such as Travelers or Geico, and one regional or mutual insurer.
  • Start at least seven days before renewal; some insurers, such as American Family, offer a discount for quoting early.
  • Price your policies bundled and separately; bundling is not always cheaper.
  • Check the company's J.D. Power claims satisfaction score and its NAIC complaint index before switching, and do not cancel your old policy until the new one is in force.
  • Telematics programs can cut premiums by up to 40 percent for safe drivers, according to ValuePenguin, but read what driving data they collect and share.
